What Are Parabens?

Ever wonder what parabens are?

Parabens are chemicals or salt compounds that are added to cosmetics to eliminate microorganisms. Parabens are essentially added to kill live bacteria and fungus (or mold). These microorganisms typically grow inside cosmetic formulations where water is an added ingredient.

Since water is the elixir of life, a water based cosmetic creates an excellent breeding ground for bacteria, fungus and all kinds of microorganisms to thrive. Therefore adding water to cosmetics will contemporaneously necessitate the introduction of chemicals, such as parabens, to eliminate microorganisms.

The following are common parabens used within the cosmetics industry and their respective primary purpose:

  • Butylparaben — anti bacterial and anti fugal

  • Ethylparaben — anti fungal

  • Methylparaben — anti fungal

  • Propylparaben —anti fungal

Cancer risk?

A common concern that consumers have about added parabens in cosmetics are potential cancer risks. At the time of this writing, parabens are not known to pose any cancer or health risks. Although parabens are essentially non-cancerous, Zaybix Organics does not add these chemicals to our products. This is possible because Zaybix Organics does not add water to any of our products.

Potential Allergy risk?

Allergic reactions are a real problem for many people. Some people have peanut and tree nut allergies, others have specific allergies to fruit or even rare allergies, such as to breastmilk.

Although I would venture to say that most people do not suffer from allergic reactions due to parabens, due to possible allergy concerns, Zaybix Organics does not add parabens to our formulations. Adding chemicals give consumers an increased chance for yet another potential allergic reaction (on a probabilistic level).

Added parabens may also be of concern if you are embarking on a skin care restoration process. There is a real potential that you may not see desired results due to possible unknown allergic reactions to parabens. Without eliminating these chemicals from your everyday regiment, you can never be sure parabens are not standing in the way between you and the most healthy, supple skin of your life.

Many moisturizers and cosmetics have water as an added ingredient. Parabens are added to water-based cosmetics to eliminate microorganisms that thrive in a water rich environment.

Parabens are not the enemy

The general attributes and intended outcomes for parabens are admirable. Antibacterials and anti-fungal agents reduce the spread of diseases and infections. The world is a better place with parabens. Although parabens are essentially harmless and ultimately helpful to consumers of water-based cosmetics, as a consumer, you can rest assured that Zaybix Organics does not add these chemicals to our face and body creams.
